Laser Cutting Tools for Beginners: Best Materials, Software & Setup

Getting started with laser cutting can feel confusing at first, especially with so many different laser machines, materials and accessories available online.

These are the exact laser cutting tools, materials and software I personally use for my own projects, including laser-cut lanterns, acrylic signs, layered wall art and engraved designs.

One of the most common beginner mistakes is buying random tools or low-quality materials that don’t work well together - often leading to poor results and wasted money.

In this guide, I’ll share the laser cutter, plywood, acrylic, software and accessories I use for my own laser cutting projects, along with some useful information for beginners looking into laser cutting and engraving.

If you’re looking for a beginner laser cutting setup that is reliable, beginner-friendly and capable of producing professional-looking results, this guide will help you choose the right tools and materials.

Ortur Laser Master 3 (LU2-10A 10W)

The main laser machine I use is the Ortur Laser Master 3 with the LU2-10A 10W laser module.

For beginners looking for a powerful diode laser cutter without moving into expensive CO2 laser machines, this is one of the best options available.

Unlike many other lasers, the LU2-10A is a true 10W optical output module, which gives it strong cutting performance for wood and dark acrylic.

It offers a very good balance between:

  • cutting power
  • engraving quality
  • speed
  • price
  • beginner-friendly

Ortur Laser Master 3 Specifications

  • 10W optical laser power
  • Compressed laser spot (~0.05 × 0.1 mm)
  • Up to 15,000 mm/min engraving speed
  • Wi-Fi and USB connectivity
  • Rotary attachment compatible
  • Air assist compatible
  • 40 × 40 cm working area

What Can a 10W Diode Laser Cut?

A 10W diode laser like the Ortur LM3 works very well for:

  • Plywood
  • Cast Acrylic
  • Leather
  • MDF
  • Wood Engraving
  • Coated Metal Engraving

For beginners, 3mm plywood is usually the easiest material to start with because it cuts cleanly and consistently.

Best Wood for Laser Cutting

Choosing the right plywood is one of the most important parts of getting clean laser cutting results.

Even a good laser cutter can struggle with poor-quality wood.

For most beginner laser cutting projects, I recommend using 3mm plywood because it offers the best balance between:

  • strength
  • clean cuts
  • faster cutting speeds
  • easy assembly

Birch vs Poplar vs MDF for Laser Cutting

Material Price Strength Finish Quality Good for Laser Cutting
Birch Plywood Higher Strong Cleaner edges and premium finish Excellent
Poplar Plywood Medium Medium Easier to cut but softer edges Good
MDF Lower Medium More smoke and darker edges Average

Can Diode Lasers Cut Acrylic?

One thing many beginners don’t realise is that diode lasers cannot cut all acrylic types and colours equally.

With a blue diode laser like the Ortur Laser Master 3 (LU2-10A), darker acrylic colours absorb the laser much better than clear or light colours.

For my own projects, I mainly use:

3mm Black Cast Acrylic

This type of acrylic works well with a 10W diode laser because it:

  • absorbs the laser properly
  • cuts more reliably
  • engraves well
  • produces cleaner edges

Can a Diode Laser Cut Clear or Light Acrylic?

Clear acrylic, white acrylic and many light or pastel acrylic colours usually do not cut properly with a blue diode laser because the laser beam passes through the material instead of being absorbed.

This is why black acrylic is one of the most commonly recommended acrylic types for diode laser cutting.

Cast vs Extruded Acrylic for Laser Cutting

Both cast and extruded black acrylic can technically be cut with a 10W diode laser, but cast acrylic usually gives:

  • cleaner cuts
  • less melting
  • better engraving results
  • a more professional finish

That’s why I personally prefer using black cast acrylic for my projects.
